Celebración del Día del Libro
en el Instituto Cervantes de Seattle
Celebration of International Book Day
University of Washington campus, on Tuesday, April 23-24.
The Instituto Cervantes of Seattle with the support of the Division of Spanish and Portuguese, the Center for Spanish Studies, and with the special collaboration of professor Donald Gilbert-Santamaría, invites you to participate in a traditional tribute to Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra.
April 23 is a symbolic date for world literature for on this date and in the same year of 1616, Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died. It is also the date of birth or death of other prominent authors such as Maurice Druon, K.Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla and Manuel Mejía Vallejo. It was a natural choice for UNESCO's General Conference to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors on this date, encouraging everyone, and in particular young people, to discover the pleasure of reading and gain a renewed respect for the irreplaceable contributions of those who have furthered the social and cultural progress of humanity. The idea for this celebration originated in Catalonia where on 23 April, Saint George's Day, a rose is traditionally given as a gift for each book sold.

PROTEAN PICASSO IN VANCOUVER B.C.
Picasso fans - mark your calendars. From October 15 through January 15, 2006, the Vancouver Art Gallery will present the largest number of Picasso paintings ever exhibited in Vancouver in combination with Canada's most significant collection of the artist's work on paper. "Protean Picasso: Drawings and Prints from the National Gallery of Canada" and "Selected Paintings from International Collections" will be a show of paintings and prints that span a 50-year period. Works stretch from Picasso's Blue Period of the early 1900s, through his teens and the 1920s when he experimented with various aspects of Cubism and Classicism, to works from the 1930s.
