Celebración del Día del Libro en el Instituto Cervantes de Seattle

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

We are pleased to invite you to join us in a celebration of “El Día del Libro” on the University of Washington campus, on Tuesday, April 24. With the support of the Division of Spanish and Portuguese, the Center for Spanish Studies, and with the special collaboration of professor Donald Gilbert-Santamaría, we would like to invite you to participate in a traditional tribute to Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra.  April 23 is a symbolic date for world literature for on this date and in the same year of 1616, Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died. It is also the date of birth or death of other prominent authors such as Maurice Druon, K.Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla and Manuel Mejía Vallejo. It was a natural choice for UNESCO's General Conference to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors on this date, encouraging everyone, and in particular young people, to discover the pleasure of reading and gain a renewed respect for the irreplaceable contributions of those who have furthered the social and cultural progress of humanity. The idea for this celebration originated in Catalonia where on 23 April, Saint George's Day, a rose is traditionally given as a gift for each book sold.

We, the Instituto Cervantes of Seattle, will also participate in this world-wide circle of reading, with a direct videoconference link to Madrid during our readings. These are the participation norms:

1. Choose a literary text in any of the languages, dialects and variants of Spain and Latin America , of not more than 4 minutes of length. This year we will also make a small tribute to the figure of Shakespeare, should you chose to read a poem of the bard of Stratford Upon Avon
2. Please confirm your participation via e-mail at:  icervsea@u.washington.edu to reserve a place in the table of readers.
3. Come to Kane Hall room 019, on April 24 from 11:00a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and you will be called to read your favorite writer.
4. You will receive a rose and a gift.
5. At 12:30 we will make a videoconferencing connection with Madrid to participate in the ongoing reading of the Quijote.
6. During this reading, our good friend who fought with the Lincoln Brigade for the freedom of Spain , Abe Osheroff will also take part in this important event.

1. Elige un texto literario en cualquiera de las lenguas, dialectos y variantes hispánicas, de no más de 4 minutos de duración. Este año realizaremos un pequeño homenaje también a la figura de Shakespeare, con lo que te puedes animar a declamar algun poema del genio de Stradford Upon Avon
2. Llama al teléfono 206 6168464 de Seattle, o envía un mensaje a icervsea@u.washington.edu ,  para registrar tu nombre y reservar un lugar en la tabla de lectores.
3. Acércate a Kenny Hall del Campus de la Universidad de Washington el día 24, de 11:00 a 13:00, y serás llamado para leer ante todos las palabras de tu escritor favorito.
4. Recibirás una rosa y un regalo.
5. A las 12:30 realizaremos una conexión por videoconferencia con Madrid para participar en la lectura continuada del Quijote.
6. En esta lectura intervendrá nuestro buen amigo y miembro de la Brigada Lincoln, que luchó por la libertad en España y en todo el mundo, Abe Osehroff.
